HSAP Student Excellence

HSAP Student Assessment Criteria



Students, employers and teachers need a common set of criteria to work from to identify what an excellent HSAP student apprentice looks like.  Below is a list of criteria that we use to determine student progress in HSAP.

On the Job Assessment 


Trade Knowledge 

1. Understands and remembers appropriate names for tools and parts.
2. Understands and remembers the steps in a variety of different jobs.
3. Can accurately follow a plan.

Trade Skills

1. Uses tools and/or technology skillfully. 
2. Completes work tasks accurately (ex. measurement and calculations). 
3. Care and pride are obvious in the quality of workmanship.

Production

1. Shows expected improvement in accuracy and work quality.  
2. Shows expected improvement in speed and efficiency.

Safety Knowledge

1. Learns and follows company safety rules.
2. Is aware of tasks and areas that are off-limits.

Safety Application

1. Discusses safety with supervisors as required.
2. Wears personal protective equipment as required without prompting. 
3. Completes jobs safely using tools and equipment.
4. Asks questions when faced with an unknown safety situation.
5. Looks out for own and other’s safety.

Communication

1. Listens carefully and follows verbal explanations.
2. Asks questions for clarification as needed.
3. Can follow text and/or diagram instructions.
4. Produces clear writing or typing (if needed).

Stays on Task

1. Uses time efficiently to complete tasks and meet deadlines.
2. Does not waste time with distractions (e.g. cell phones, unnecessary conversations or overly slow work).

Cooperation

1. Can work as a team member.
2. Can anticipate next steps.
3. Can do their fair share of the work.
4. Willingly assists work partners.

Attempts to Improve

1. Strives to improve through self-awareness of their own work.
2. Knowledge continues to grow as expected.
3. Can handle more complex work, when appropriate.

Problem Solving

1. Asks for help or reports problems when unable to resolve an issue.
2. Can refer to documents (e.g. plans, charts, diagrams, etc.) if needed.
3. Can look for the root cause of a problem.
4. Does not give up too easily.

Motivation

1. Has a willingness to come to work.
2. Has a willingness to work on the job site.  

Adaptability

1. Can adjust quickly from one job to the next.  
2. Has a positive attitude towards change.
3. Can use knowledge and skills in new situations.
4. Has an open attitude.

Relationship with Others

1. Is respectfully appropriate with coworkers, customers, and superiors.
2. Is courteous (example: no foul language, disrespectful tone/facial expressions, speaking ill of employees or the business).

Appearance

1. Dresses appropriately for the work and is clean.

Attendance

1. Understands that “on time” means early enough to put away possessions and is ready to do work.
2. Understands that break time is not extended in to work time. 

Dependability

1. Shows a level of trustworthiness that the employer expects.  
2. Can do routine tasks with mastery.
3. Can admit mistakes.


Initiative

1. Cleans up, independently. 
2. Organizes the work site/tools, independently. 
3. Seeks new tasks when old ones have been completed.
4. Expresses interest in learning new tasks. 
5. Can predicts next steps. 
6. Shows leadership.
7. Shows willingness to do something without being told multiple times.

Accepts Guidance/Teachable

1. Does not get upset when asked to do work differently.
2. Is attentive to requests and makes a solid effort to change work/behaviour.
3. Uses advice and can handle constructive criticism. 

Work Ethic

1. Has a positive attitude toward work. 
2. Respects work time. 
3. Takes pride in his/her work. 
4. Speaks well of the company.



The criteria is scored using the following system:

Scoring Guide

10 – exceptional

9 – solid

8 – good

7 – meets minimum requirement

6 – not meeting min. requirement but shows promise and acceptable improvement

5 – not meeting min. requirement but shows small improvements

4 or Less – not meeting requirements and requires focused attention
